Are the Flexible Durso Standpipes really flexible?

Friday, 10 April 2009 21:06

The Flexible Durso Standpipes are made from flexible Schedule 40 PVC. This PVC has a slight give to it over some distance. Short distances such as 12 inches will not have much flex at all. Essentially the flexible PVC comes with a built in curve from how it was rolled and shipped which comes in handy for small overflow chambers.

The curve lets the Tee/Elbow assembly be off-center from the bulkhead. This curve is only helpful in tight spaces, it is of no help in larger overflow chambers as the standpipe will simply lean over to the side.

Flexible PVC is reported to be more flexible when heated.  This would include soaking in boiling water or heated with a hot air gun.  Typically you would not do this for a standpipe installation.  Tricks like this are more commonly used when flexible PVC is used for drain lines where tighter turns are required.

This is the best invention yet! I have a 1.5 inch bulkhead and have this standpipe and I will tell you I will never have another standpipe without one. I first installed my tank in the living room and couldn't bare the noise. It sounded like an awful high pitched water drain. I installed a Durso Standpipe and the only thing loud was my Hydor Koralia 4. THAT'S IMPRESSIVE!
